Braces colors: how to choose your elastic ties
Favorite shades, subtle options, and what the little colored rings on braces actually do.

Braces colors usually come from elastic ties that hold the wire to individual brackets. If your appliance uses them, you can ask about the available colors when the team replaces the ties. The choice is personal; no color whitens enamel.
Read the sourceChoosing braces colors can be a small, enjoyable part of an adjustment visit. Start with two questions: does your appliance use colored ties, and which options are available for your treatment? After that, the choice can be as simple as a favorite shade or a combination you would like to try.
What actually changes color?
The color usually comes from the little elastic rings around individual brackets, rather than the brackets themselves. These are called ligatures or elastic ties. The American Association of Orthodontists' glossary explains that they hold the archwire in a bracket. Some ligatures are thin wires instead.
They are different from the removable elastics prescribed to apply additional force. Those bands have an individual attachment pattern and wear schedule. Our guide to rubber bands for braces covers that separate part of treatment.
Appliance design matters, too. Self-ligating brackets use a built-in clip or door to hold the wire, so they do not need the same elastic ties for that job. Ask which choices fit your particular braces rather than assuming every system has the same color options.
Which braces colors should I choose?
There is no required palette for your age, gender, or skin tone. Pick a look you enjoy. If a large color chart feels overwhelming, narrow it to one of these approaches:
- One favorite color: choose a single shade, such as blue, purple, or teal, for a simple starting point.
- A two-color combination: consider navy and silver, purple and teal, or another pair you like together.
- A personal connection: use a team, school, holiday, or celebration as inspiration if that sounds fun to you.
- A quieter look: ask to compare neutral and clear options beside the brighter choices.
These are ideas to discuss, not a list of colors the office necessarily stocks. Ask to see the actual samples and bring a second choice. A photo can help explain the look you mean, but screen settings, filters, and lighting can change how a shade appears.
Which braces colors make teeth look whiter?
No tie color bleaches your teeth. Choosing a color changes the appearance of the appliance around them. The American Dental Association describes tooth bleaching as a separate treatment that changes tooth color chemically; that is not what an elastic tie does.
If you want a whiter-looking smile, compare a few actual samples rather than relying on a guaranteed result from an online color chart. There is no need to choose a shade you dislike because a list calls it the best. If the concern is a change in the tooth itself, ask your dental team about it before trying a whitening product.
Do clear or white braces ties stain?
Light-colored or transparent ties can change color during wear. In a clinical study of 20 adults, researchers compared four brands of esthetic elastic ligatures when placed and after 30 days. All four showed staining, with substantial differences between individuals.
That small 2016 study does not rank every color or product available today, and it cannot predict how your ties will look at your next visit. It does explain why a low-visibility option should not be described as stain-proof. Ask your team what to expect from the material being used and when it is due to be changed.
Can I change colors at my next appointment?
Often, yes, if your braces use elastic ties and they are being replaced. The AAO notes that these ties are generally changed during appointments. Ask at the start of the visit so the team knows your preference; the treatment needs and available materials still come first.
Leave changes to the orthodontic team. Do not remove ties or add bands bought online to change the look. If a tie comes off or something feels loose, contact the office for appliance advice rather than attempting a cosmetic repair.
Decorative appliances sold separately are a different issue. Our guide to basement and fashion braces explains the safety concerns and how to check who is providing care.
Ask about braces options in Santa Clarita
At SC Orthodontics' Valencia office, patients from across Santa Clarita can ask how appearance preferences fit into their orthodontic plan. Our metal-braces and ceramic-braces pages explain the broader appliance choices. Color is one preference to discuss alongside the treatment your bite needs.
For your next visit, bring a favorite shade, a backup, and any question about your current ties. If you are still choosing treatment, ask which appliances are suitable before deciding on their finishing details.
A few more questions
Can adults choose colored braces ties?
Yes, color can be a personal preference at any age when the appliance and treatment plan allow it. Ask which ties are available for your braces; there is no requirement to choose clear or neutral colors because you are an adult.
Read the sourceCan ceramic braces have colored ties?
Some ceramic brackets use conventional ties, while others are self-ligating. Ask whether your specific system and treatment stage allow colored ties. Choosing a tie does not change the material of the ceramic bracket.
Read the sourceDo darker braces colors prevent stains?
Do not treat any color as a stain-prevention method. A color preference does not replace cleaning, and the cited study of esthetic ligatures did not establish a stain-proof dark color. Ask your team about the materials used in your braces.
