Basement braces: risks, warning signs, and safer next steps
Seeing cheap braces offered on social media? Check the person, the plan, and the follow-up before anyone puts an appliance on your teeth.

“Basement braces” commonly means braces applied by unqualified, unlicensed people. They can overlap with fake or fashion braces. Choose an examination by a licensed dental professional rather than an unsupervised appliance.
Read the sourceA low price or a convincing social-media video can make an unfamiliar braces service look appealing. Before anyone attaches an appliance to your teeth, find out who is responsible for your dental care and what examination comes first.
What are basement braces?
The American Association of Orthodontists uses “basement braces” for fake braces applied by unqualified, unlicensed people, often in homes. The label describes an unsafe arrangement, not a recognized type of orthodontic treatment.
- Basement braces: someone without the required qualifications applies them.
- Fashion or fake braces: the goal is the appearance of braces.
- DIY braces: someone attempts tooth movement or appliance placement themselves.
These categories overlap. A social-media label does not tell you whether care is legitimate; verify the treating professional rather than judging by the room, price, or photos.
Why can fake braces cause real problems?
The AAO warns about unwanted tooth movement, injury from loose parts, and infection concerns with fashion braces. Looking decorative does not make an appliance harmless. Professional removal may also be needed, including for adhesive left on teeth.
A separate concern is what was never examined. The ADA’s guidance on DIY dentistry explains why teeth and their supporting tissues need assessment before movement. A photo showing straighter front teeth cannot establish that the gums, supporting bone, and bite are healthy.
How do you check the person and the plan?
Ask for the treating dentist’s full name and California license number. Use the California Department of Consumer Affairs license search to verify the license type, status, and any listed disciplinary information. A social-media handle or a training certificate is not a substitute for that check.
Then ask practical questions before agreeing to care:
- Who will examine me and explain the findings?
- What problem is this treatment intended to address?
- Which records are needed before a plan is chosen?
- Who will check progress and respond if something goes wrong?
- What does the total fee include, and what might cost extra?
Keep the answers and treatment proposal together. If the provider will not identify the responsible dentist, or cannot explain how you will receive follow-up care, pause and seek a licensed professional’s opinion.
What if you already have basement braces?
Arrange an examination with a licensed dentist or orthodontist. When calling, explain who placed the appliance, when it was fitted, and any discomfort or changes you have noticed. Bring any packaging, messages, or treatment information you have. You do not need to settle on a diagnosis before asking for help.
Do not tighten, glue, or pull off components yourself. Ask the dental professional how the appliance and adhesive should be handled after examining your mouth.
Seek emergency care for trouble breathing or swallowing, or uncontrolled bleeding. Severe pain with facial swelling or fever needs urgent dental or medical assessment. Tell the office promptly about loose parts, worsening pain, or new bite changes rather than waiting for a cosmetic adjustment.
What if cost is why you were considering them?
Cost is a reasonable concern to bring to a consultation. Ask for the recommendation and full fee in writing, including records, visits, retainers, and any separate dental care. Ask which costs are essential now, which depend on the treatment chosen, and what payment options are available.
If you are in Valencia or elsewhere in Santa Clarita, contact SC Orthodontics to discuss an assessment. Our first-consultation guide explains how to prepare, and our fees and financing page provides practice information. An examination comes before a recommendation about removal, treatment, or observation.
If you already have prescribed braces and simply want a different look, ask your treating team about colored elastic ties. Do not add online accessories to change the appliance yourself.
A few more questions
Are basement braces the same as fashion braces?
The terms overlap. “Fashion braces” describes a cosmetic look; “basement braces” emphasizes unqualified placement. Neither label establishes that treatment is safe.
