Can you whiten your teeth with Invisalign?
Whitening with Invisalign in Valencia and Santa Clarita: choosing a compatible gel, planning the timing and knowing when to ask about refills.

Yes, whitening can be coordinated with Invisalign treatment when your orthodontist confirms the product, tray fit and timing. The right combination matters: a gel’s peroxide percentage alone does not tell you whether it belongs in your aligners.
If you are straightening your teeth and thinking about their color too, you do not necessarily need two unrelated plans. At SC Orthodontics, we help patients in Valencia and Santa Clarita consider whitening alongside their Invisalign treatment or retainer routine.
Start with the question you actually want answered: can whitening fit the stage of treatment you are in now? Bring your current trays and tell us what you would like to change. That gives Dr. Shadi Haykani a useful starting point for discussing your options.
Can you whiten during Invisalign treatment?
Invisalign offers a Professional Whitening System developed for use with its aligners, Vivera retainers and designated whitening trays. Its at-home formulation contains 10% carbamide peroxide. The manufacturer describes use before, during or after treatment, including with bonded attachments.
That compatibility applies to the specified system. Invisalign also states that ordinary Opalescence PF is not approved by Align for use with Invisalign aligners or Vivera retainers. Two products sharing an ingredient or percentage are not automatically interchangeable. See Invisalign’s formulation and compatibility guidance.
At your visit, ask which exact product is being recommended and which trays to use. We coordinate the whitening instructions with your Invisalign treatment plan; do not replace your prescribed aligner routine with an online whitening schedule.
What does 10% carbamide peroxide mean?
Carbamide peroxide is a whitening ingredient that releases hydrogen peroxide. The two percentages are not equivalent: 10% carbamide peroxide is not 10% hydrogen peroxide. The American Dental Association’s whitening overview explains the ingredients and why concentration, application and the condition of your teeth matter.
SC Orthodontics offers 10% carbamide peroxide whitening gel refills. Ask our team to confirm the formulation for your trays, current availability, the fee and the instructions that apply to you. A refill is a chance to check the plan, especially if your aligners, retainers or dental work have changed since your last whitening course.
What about attachments, fillings or crowns?
Attachments help guide tooth movement. Their presence is a reason to discuss product selection and timing with your orthodontist, rather than choosing a gel from its label alone. Read our guide to Invisalign attachments if you are still learning what the bonded shapes do.
Whitening affects natural teeth; crowns, veneers and tooth-colored fillings do not whiten in the same way. Existing dental work can therefore affect your shade goals. Mention any restoration you can see when you smile and any replacement work you are planning.
White spots or a single dark tooth also deserve an assessment before you choose a whitening routine. Our white-spots guide explains why a change in color is not always simply a surface stain.
How should whitening fit your daily routine?
Temporary sensitivity and gum irritation can occur with whitening. Tell the team about past reactions or existing sensitivity before starting. If discomfort is strong, persists or worsens, stop the whitening product and contact the office for advice.
Leave with instructions for the specific gel and appliance you will use. Rather than assuming a universal overnight schedule, ask:
- Which tray should I use, and does its fit need checking?
- How much of this product should I apply, and for how long?
- How does whitening fit my current aligner or retainer wear schedule?
- What should I do if I notice sensitivity or irritation?
- How should I store the gel and clean the trays?
Keep those directions with the product so you can refer back to them. For everyday appliance care, see our guides to cleaning Invisalign aligners and coffee during Invisalign treatment. Whitening and routine cleaning serve different purposes.

A few more questions
Can I put any 10% carbamide peroxide gel in Invisalign?
No. Confirm the exact formulation and tray compatibility with your orthodontist. The concentration by itself is not enough to choose a product.
Do I have to wait until Invisalign is finished to ask about whitening?
No. Bring it up during treatment so the team can discuss timing with you. Whether to begin now or later depends on the plan recommended for your teeth and appliance.
Can I get whitening gel refills at SC Orthodontics?
Yes. Contact our office serving Valencia and Santa Clarita about 10% carbamide peroxide gel refills. We will confirm availability, pricing and the product and instructions for your trays before you begin.
