How to clean Invisalign aligners during treatment
A repeatable routine starts with the directions for your trays and the cleaner you actually have.

Clean Invisalign aligners gently using the instructions for your trays and chosen product, then rinse thoroughly. Keep the routine your treating team prescribed. Toothpaste and soaking advice are product-specific; avoid hot water, mouthwash soaks, and denture cleaners.
Read the sourceCleaning an active Invisalign tray is a small task that repeats throughout treatment. The confusing part is choosing between a brush, toothpaste, crystals, and products marketed for retainers. Begin with the instructions supplied for your aligners and the exact cleaner you own, rather than combining different online routines.
A simple routine before the trays go back in
Invisalign’s patient use-and-care instructions call for clean hands, cleaning before reinsertion, and checking trays for cracks or distortion. Build those steps into each meal break:
- Wash your hands and remove the trays using the technique you were shown.
- Gently clean the inside and outside with the soft brush and cleaning method approved for your appliance.
- Rinse away residue thoroughly, then check the tray before putting it back.
Keep the supplies together so the routine is easy to repeat. A separate small brush for trays can make it simpler to remember which product belongs on the appliance and which belongs on your teeth.
Can you clean Invisalign with toothpaste?
The manufacturer’s cleaning FAQ allows a soft toothbrush with mild toothpaste and lukewarm water. That is specific Invisalign guidance, not permission to use any whitening toothpaste or transfer the method to every clear appliance. Ask your team to identify a suitable product rather than guessing what “mild” means on a label.
If your treating team has told you to use a soft brush and water without toothpaste, keep following that instruction and ask before changing products. Bring the product name or a photo of its label. The useful answer is one clear routine for your trays, not a mixture of conflicting advice.
Using cleaning crystals: match the product directions
Cleaning Crystals and Cleaning Crystals+ are different products. For the US Invisalign Cleaning Crystals+ bottle, the manufacturer currently describes this process:
- Use one capful (5 g) with 100 ml of warm, not hot, water. Fully cover the aligners.
- Gently stir or agitate for 20 seconds, then soak for 15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with water afterward.
Check the label on your own bottle before starting. These quantities and timing apply to that named formulation; they are not a recipe for other powders, tablets, or home mixtures.
The original Cleaning Crystals use individual, single-use packets. Their directions include warm-water immersion, agitation, a soak of at least 15 minutes, further agitation, and thorough rinsing. Follow that packet’s directions rather than substituting a capful from another product. Neither version gives permission to combine cleaners.
Avoid cleaning methods that can damage the trays
Keep aligners away from hot water and harsh chemicals. Invisalign’s instructions also say to hand-wash the case with soap and water, rather than use a dishwasher. Cleaning should not involve heating, bending, or trying to reshape a tray.
The manufacturer advises against denture cleaners and mouthwash soaks because they may dull or damage the aligner surface. A mouthwash recommended for your mouth is not automatically an aligner cleaner. Do not improvise a stronger mixture to chase a stain.
Clean your mouth and protect your wear schedule
Cleaning trays does not replace oral hygiene. The ADA recommends fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush for teeth, brushing twice daily, cleaning between teeth daily, and regular dental visits. Follow your dental team’s additional meal-time instructions during treatment. Product compatibility for trays is a separate question from choosing toothpaste for enamel.
The AAO explains that aligners work through a planned sequence and are removed for meals and oral care. Arrange cleaning within those breaks and use your own prescribed wear and tray-change schedule. A timer can help you finish a labeled soak without forgetting the trays in the bathroom while you return to work.
Reduce avoidable staining by taking trays out for coffee and other drinks except plain water at a suitable temperature, as Invisalign advises. Our coffee guide covers drink breaks and brushing-timing questions in more detail.
Make the routine workable away from home
Before leaving, check that your case, brush, and usual supplies are in your bag. Think about where you will clean up after lunch, particularly on travel days or long outings. A routine that works at your bathroom sink may need a little planning elsewhere. Keep the product instructions accessible instead of relying on memory for a new cleaner.
The AAO recommends storing aligners in their case while eating and getting appliance-specific cleaning instructions from your orthodontic team. If your usual routine is repeatedly impractical, explain the obstacle and ask for an approved alternative. Do not quietly turn a short meal break into hours without the trays.
When cleaning is not solving the problem
Report cracks, distortion, or significant fit problems to your orthodontist. Invisalign’s instructions say to stop use and contact the doctor for sharp pain or significant discomfort. Do not force, heat, or scrape a tray into shape.
If odor or deposits remain despite your instructed routine, ask your dental team for advice and name the product you use. Mention whether the concern is on the tray or a tooth.
SC Orthodontics patients in Valencia and across Santa Clarita can contact the team with care questions. For long-term retention after treatment, see our separate retainer-cleaning guide.
A few more questions
Is a retainer-cleaning tablet automatically suitable for Invisalign?
No. Check compatibility with your exact aligners and ask your team. Invisalign specifically cautions against denture cleaners; a similar-looking appliance or broad product name does not establish suitability.
Read the sourceCan I leave Cleaning Crystals+ soaking overnight?
Do not turn its labeled 15-minute routine into an overnight soak on your own. Follow your product’s directions and prescribed aligner wear schedule.
Read the sourceShould I change trays early if this pair is stained?
Ask your orthodontist before changing the sequence. A clearer-looking tray is not a reason to substitute your own treatment schedule.
