Notes from the Practice / Choosing braces
Damon vs. traditional braces: what actually differs?
Understand the bracket design, then ask about the complete treatment plan in Valencia and Santa Clarita.

Damon braces and traditional braces both use brackets and a wire to move teeth. The main design difference is how each bracket holds that wire. Damon is a self-ligating system with a built-in closing mechanism; conventional brackets usually use small elastic or wire ties.
That difference is useful to understand, but it does not tell you which treatment will suit your bite or how soon you will finish. At SC Orthodontics, serving Valencia and Santa Clarita, the conversation starts with the movement your teeth need and the plan for getting there.
What does “self-ligating” mean?
“Ligating” means fastening the wire to the bracket. A self-ligating bracket has a built-in clip or door, so it does not need a separate little tie for that job. Damon is one brand within this category. Traditional brackets hold the wire with elastic rings or fine wire ties.
Both are fixed appliances: the brackets remain attached during treatment. Self-ligating does not mean self-adjusting or treatment without checkups. Your orthodontist still plans tooth movement, checks progress and changes the wire or other parts when needed.
The little ties around a bracket are also different from rubber bands that stretch between upper and lower teeth. A Damon plan may still include those bite-correction elastics. Ask which parts of your own plan require daily participation.
Will Damon braces work faster?
A bracket name cannot promise a shorter course of treatment. A randomized trial comparing SmartClip self-ligating brackets with conventional brackets found no statistically significant difference in overall treatment time or number of visits. That trial did not test Damon brackets, so it cannot establish a Damon-specific advantage.
Ask what the estimated timeline covers: initial alignment, bite correction, finishing details and the point when braces can come off. A change that makes a wire easier to secure is not the same as completing every treatment goal sooner. Our note on how long braces take explains useful questions about an estimate.
Similarly, a bracket choice alone cannot establish whether you need extractions, expansion or another appliance. Those decisions need an assessment of your teeth, supporting tissues and bite. If a recommendation differs between plans, ask for the reason.
What changes in everyday life?
With either type, you will need to clean carefully around the brackets and wire, keep dental checkups, follow food guidance and attend orthodontic visits. A built-in clip does not remove the need for brushing or cleaning between teeth.
Discuss what matters to you before choosing: appearance, cleaning, school or work commitments, and the expected visit schedule. Do not assume that either system guarantees less discomfort or fewer visits. Ask what to expect for your specific treatment and whom to contact if a bracket or wire is bothering you.
If you like colored elastic ties, ask whether the recommended bracket system uses them. If a less noticeable appearance is your priority, discuss the actual bracket options offered rather than assuming all self-ligating braces look the same.
How should you compare the cost?
Request a written estimate for the complete proposed treatment. Ask whether the price includes records, regular visits, repairs, retainers and follow-up after the braces are removed. Also ask how insurance and any payment arrangement affect your own responsibility.
There is no universal Damon surcharge or discount that applies to every practice and case. SC confirms your options and fees after evaluation. Comparing what each plan includes is more useful than comparing an appliance name or advertised starting price.
Five questions to bring to your consultation
- What tooth and bite changes are you recommending, and why?
- Why do you recommend this bracket system for those goals?
- Will I need elastics, extractions or any additional appliance?
- What is the estimated timeline, visit schedule and daily care routine?
- What does the written fee include, including retention?
SC Orthodontics offers Damon braces and traditional metal braces. Board-certified orthodontist Dr. Shadi Haykani evaluates your teeth and bite and explains the options. Bring your questions to a free consultation; Sunday and evening appointments are available for people in Valencia and Santa Clarita.

This general educational note draws on the American Association of Orthodontists’ explanation of braces and a randomized trial comparing self-ligating and conventional appliances. That trial studied SmartClip, not every Damon model; it supports caution about broad category-wide speed claims, not a prediction about your care. Your own treatment recommendation requires an examination.
